Sandwiched between the influx of the Illinois Bayou into Lake Dardanelle and Interstate 40, Ouita Coal Company Trail (OCCT) has been hailed as a favorite among off-road cyclists in the natural state.

The bike trail is accessed from Illinois Bayou Park by a paved .8 mile Wildlife Observation Trail that leads back to the dirt trail head. The OCCT features close to eight miles of diverse terrain including shale mounds and challenging climbs.

The OCCT and Illinois Bayou Park also sits on a plot of land rich in regional history. Dwight Mission was founded near here in 1820 as a school for Cherokee children. It was the first educational institution in the state and brought many other “firsts’ to the region including a post office and doctor’s clinic.

Joggers, hikers, and leashed dogs are also welcome on the trail which features unique views of Lake Dardanelle, public restrooms and plenty of parking.
